EL BAÑO DEL PAPA (2007)
1988. Melo (Uruguay) awaits the visit of Pope John Paul II. Thousands are expected to attend. Certain well-informed sources quote 50,000 visitors... The inhabitants, mostly poor, know what that means: 50,000 pilgrims will want to eat, drink, buy paper flags, souvenirs, commemorative medallions... Overflowing with enthusiasm, more than divine blessing, they hope to obtain a bit of material happiness. Beto, a small-time smuggler, reckons he’s found the best idea of the lot: “the Pope’s toilet”, where thousands of pilgrims will be able to relieve themselves. Let the others fry mountains of sausages and bake rolls: he’ll make his fortune with human waste.
