“Thirty years since HIV/AIDS was first diagnosed, Gehitu (the Association for Gay, Lesbian, Transsexual and Bisexual people in the Basque Country) underpins its struggle to prevent the disease from spreading with this exhibition. This is a tribute not only to the emblematic people who have suffered physical death as the victims of HIV/AIDS, but also to those who continue to experience intellectual death as a result of the prevailing stigma.
Social stigma, sometimes even accepted as such by the sufferers themselves, continues to do great harm. We explain the personal situation endured by people afflicted with an illness labelled by society as pariah. Visibility is the best tool, not only for raising awareness but also for helping us to gain strength and introduce the appropriate measures for saving many lives before it is too late”.
