DAYS OF GLORY (Indigènes, 2006)
OPENING NIGHT
1943. World War II. Although they had never set foot in France, Saïd, Abdelkader, Messaoud and Yassir enlisted in the French army with another 130,000 “indigenous soldiers” to liberate the metropolis from the Nazi enemy. These heroes forgotten by history win battles in Italy, Provence and the Vosges before finding themselves alone to defend an Alsatian village against a German battalion. This film by Rachid Bouchareb, director of Little Senegal (2001), takes a look back at the part played by North Africans in WWII: “Liberating a country they considered to be their own, their ‘fatherland’, the way they were received in the towns and villages of France and the way they were applauded along the roads, all left a strong mark on their memories. And none of the injustices they have suffered since have succeeded in deleting that mark. I had wanted to make this film for a long time so that youngsters could learn about what happened and the others could remember it. The film is a foundation stone on the basis of which to continue building a common future”.
